New Urban Fantasy

I recently came across a new urban fantasy author, Gena Showalter. She sold her first book 4 years ago and already has a range of 13 books available, with more in the pipeline. That is a very short time in which to become a New York Times best seller.

The book reviews I found for her looked interesting and I decided to try the first book in her Alien Huntress series, Awaken Me Darkly. The story follows Mia Snow, and alien huntress for the New Chicago Police Department. A series of strange killings (as if there are ever any normal killings) has her and her partner, Dallas, hunting a particularly nasty alien. Do yourself a favour and do not read the official book synopsis – it doesn’t do the book justice at all.

The book started a bit slowly  and I must admit that I had some Anita Blake flashbacks at the start. Once I got past that and started on the story, I assumed the “not putting this book down” position.  Although the initial character building was a bit painful, Mia Snow’s character becomes tangible as the story progresses. Her concerns and joys are believable and I found myself rooting for her all the way. The plot’s unpredictability had me engaged throughout, the slow start quickly forgotten.

Ms. Showalter  is definitely an author that will go on my “to read” list.  You may want to try one of her books if you’ve already finished all the Laurell K. Hamilton books you could find. (Guilty). If they’re anything like Awaken Me Darkly, you’re in for a fun romp.
