John Scalzi - Agent to the StarsAs an avid reader without access to a good library, I’m constantly looking for ways to feed my habit without breaking the piggy bank. This has become much easier now that books are available in electronic format. There are actually quite a few sites that host only FREE ebooks. No strings attached. How awesome is that?

Often a lot of the work is in the public domain because it’s just so old, but if you’re a fan of the classics, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Fortunately there are a few sites, like ManyBooks,  that also have some very interesting contemporary offerings. One of these (and the review for today) is John Scalzi’s Agent to the Stars.

This is a very quirky story about Thomas Stein, one of Hollywood’s hottest young agents. Unfortunately for Thomas, this fact has also come to the attention of the space-faring Yherajk people, who desperately want to befriend humans, but score a 2 on the looks scale and even less on the olfactory scale. In order to make a good first impression, the Yherajk decided to hire Tom Stein as their agent.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the story is exceptionally well written for a first novel and had me chortling happily from behind my eReader the entire time. Thomas is fast on his feet and quick to talk himself in and out of situations.  Hiding the world’s ugliest alien is not all that easy and gets even trickier when you have a journalist from some shady tabloid on your tail looking for the next big story.

Agent to the Stars is definitely a worthwhile read and if it wasn’t free, I’d still recommend that you give it try. Go get your copy from ManyBooks. Perhaps that will whet your appetite for more of John Scalzi’s work.
