Happy Snak | Aliens need snack food too

04 Apr

Happy Snak by Nicole Kimberling is one of those serendipitous finds that crosses one’s path all too seldom.  I came across it in one of the newsletters that I subscribe to and the synopsis intrigued me immediately. The book was even better than the synopsis.

The story revolves around Gaia Jones, an entrepreneur who’s only desire is to make a name for her snack bar on A-Ki station. Unfortunately fate interferes when she rushes to the aid of a dying alien. And not just any alien, but Kenjan, the lover of the alien leader, Oziru. Events take an even stranger turn when Oziru asks Gaia to be the guardian of Kenjan’s ghost. Trapped between the human government and alien authorities on A-Ki station, Gaia can’t refuse their generous offer of a new shop in return for her services as guardian. After all, how much trouble can one alien ghost be?

Dante Valentine | Urban fantasy meets Cyberpunk

29 Mar

When I first read on of Lilith Saintcrow’s books, I thought she was enjoyable enough, but not one of those authors I would put on my “must have” list. That was until I read the first Dante Valentine book, Working for the Devil. I didn’t know much about the series, but thought I should at least read the first book to see whether it was worth getting the rest. Was I in for a surprise! This book is gritty, brash and just like the main character, takes no prisoners.

Hearts and Minds

17 Mar

In my quest to find interesting new reading matter I came across the Impulse Power Stories. So far there are 3 novellas set in the Impulse Power universe (available separately as ebooks) . What a wonderful find.

I started with Hearts and Minds by J.C. Hay and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the story drew me in. It is a quick read and I finished it in an evening. However, I want more!  This little taste of Impulse Power has definitely not been enough.

Hunted, compelling dark fantasy

10 Mar

In my search for new authors I came across this gem from S.W. Vaughn. The story revolves around Grace Carrington, the runaway daughter of a rich socialite. She funds her fugitive lifestyle from casino winnings gained with the help of her new found psychic powers, but these same powers make her a target. What she doesn’t know is that she is a nehpilim – half angel, half human – and the angels are actively exterminating nephilim.

Weekly free eBook!

John Scalzi - Agent to the StarsAs an avid reader without access to a good library, I’m constantly looking for ways to feed my habit without breaking the piggy bank. This has become much easier now that books are available in electronic format. There are actually quite a few sites that host only FREE ebooks. No strings attached. How awesome is that?

Often a lot of the work is in the public domain because it’s just so old, but if you’re a fan of the classics, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Fortunately there are a few sites, like ManyBooks,  that also have some very interesting contemporary offerings. One of these (and the review for today) is John Scalzi’s Agent to the Stars.

New Urban Fantasy

04 Mar

I recently came across a new urban fantasy author, Gena Showalter. She sold her first book 4 years ago and already has a range of 13 books available, with more in the pipeline. That is a very short time in which to become a New York Times best seller.

The book reviews I found for her looked interesting and I decided to try the first book in her Alien Huntress series, Awaken Me Darkly. The story follows Mia Snow, and alien huntress for the New Chicago Police Department. A series of strange killings (as if there are ever any normal killings) has her and her partner, Dallas, hunting a particularly nasty alien. Do yourself a favour and do not read the official book synopsis – it doesn’t do the book justice at all.

Clockwork Heart

03 Mar

Last night I finished my latest ebook acquisition, Clockwork Heart by Dru Pagliassotti. The book is billed as a steampunk romance and delivers fast paced action alongside a well thought out world which had me turning the pages obsessively.

The world that Pagliassotti envisions practically jumps from the pages with it’s vividly painted society dependant on large clockwork computers, programmed by punch cards and run by steam. Doesn’t that just make your little steampunk soul soar?
