The flow of ideas – or how to be productive when lazy

The flow of ideas – or how to be productive when lazy

Often I have a really great idea but it flounders at the execution stage. It’s as if once the idea has been mapped out as a draft my creative self considers the need for the idea met. The result is a plethora of half born creations. I look at these and feel a bit guilty…all that thinking gone to waste.

Then there are times when I’m just messing around, trying to figure out techniques and the result is a complete illustration which can be rolled out as a finished design. Happy little accidents I call these. This week I had two of them.

Delighted that I was so very productive, I thought I would try to finish one of my other little projects. Not sure why that seemed more like work but there you are. I’m fickle. In the absence of other finished projects go check out my happy little accident here.

Illuminati / Illuminasty

Illuminati / Illuminasty

A friend of mine started a train of thought by poking fun at the whole Illuminati debate and added me to the new ‘Illuminati – Durban Branch’ facebook page. As is the case with this kind of thing, my mind started running and I couldn’t let our new branch be without a logo.

Once the logo was made more light bulbs lit up in my brain and the result was the Illuminati / Illuminasty design. It’s perfect for days when you can’t decide whether to be good or bad – you can flip it any way you like. Get yours today.

The secret handshake is not included.

Irritable Vowels and Owls

Irritable Vowels and Owls

I have realised that I’m only happy when I’m making things. Not the kind of things you make at work. Those don’t count because they have to follow so many rules. I’m talking about the kind of things that make you grin. Naughty t-shirts. Paintings for friends. Pewter projects for the kitchen. Fun things.

And this weekend fun things came knocking at my door. A friend posted an image on my facebook page this weekend with a request for a t-shirt. Now that’s what I call a good friend. Instead of laying about wondering which project to work on I had a new project: Irritable Owl Syndrome. What fun! Also, it had swear words and I’m still 10 years old when it comes to swear words *snigger*.

Strangely enough fun things get made in record time too. The Irritable Owl was saying “Fuck Off” to the world 3 hours later at which point Kevin pointed out that I didn’t have to stop there. I could make ALL the irritable things. ALL OF THEM. So now the world also has an Irritable Vowel Syndrome t-shirt. You’re welcome.

Next weekend will probably bring more foul mouthed humour and irritable things. Can you handle the excitement?

New Shop, New Designs

New Shop, New Designs

I started this year with a bang. Or so I thought. By the time New Year rolled around I had 5 new designs and plenty of new ideas for the shop. Unfortunately my Zazzle shop doesn’t seem to have the same sense of urgency. A week after I added all my new products nothing has happened. I’ve tried to be patient. I even sent a nicely worded email to their support team. But I have ants in my pants and want my designs up yesterday. So what does any frustrated designer do when faced with shop failure? Start a new shop of course. I haven’t moved all the old designs across yet but some of the new designs are now available on RedBubble.

The range I’m most excited about is the Sty Wars range – a piggy parody on an old favourite. Go have a look and leave a comment if you like the work.

A small update

A small update

Keep Calm and Read OnThis is another semiannual post. It seems anything more than that and we get bad weather down here at the bottom end of Africa. Seeing as the weather is already bad (my ears are freezing!), I thought I may as well. As you can see, some small changes have been made to the blog, colours have  changed and things have been spruced up. Most importantly though, the little Zazzle shop has a whole new range of products. I’m not expecting you to rush out and buy them but would appreciate a visit to the shop to see what I’ve been up to. Go have a look here.

It’s very satisfying to bring a new design to life and even more so when you don’t have a brand manager saying “Move that a bit to the left”. I know all you designers out there can relate. The Keep Calm range was whipped out in a morning and had me almost as happy as Xmas and birthdays. What do you think of making your own version of popular memes?
