Random Pretties | Mark Newman’s sculpture

It’s been an age since I’ve had the opportunity to blog! I finally have a day off with no demands on my time (yay!) and decided to share some more random pretties with you. In my net ramblings I happened across a showcase of Mark Newman’s work and was mesmerised by his sculptures. He is an American artist and has been producing these beauties for 19 years.

He works in bronze and resin and produces incredibly detailed work in both mediums. It doesn’t hurt that the bulk of his work falls squarely in the fantasy genre. I found a DeviantArt page for Mark where you can go view more of his current work. The pics are from his portfolio website, here.

Random pretties | Armour for cats and mice

While browsing the internet and generally feeding my facebook addiction I stumbled upon the work of Jeff de Boer. According to his website, he is a multi-media artist with an emphasis on metal. I’m still busy browsing through his portfolio, but I have yet to find an image that doesn’t evoke my primal WANT response. Jeff’s ideas are rich and beautifully executed in whatever medium he chooses to use.

Bush pretties

I was shocked to realise that I let a whole month pass without a single blog post. How does time get away from me so quickly? Part of my excuse is that I spent a glorious week in the Timbavati going on game drives and enjoying the warmer temperatures. I could easily have stayed for another week if it wasn’t for that annoying little reality called “work”.

Random Pretties | Baroque Star Wars

Today’s random pretty comes from Mattias Adolfsson who brings us his wonderful vision of Star Wars as it would have looked during the Baroque. (Yes, I am a geek, as if you needed any further proof ^-^). Mattias is a freelance illustrator living in Sweden. He uses pen and ink to create these quirky illustrations and colours are added with watercolours.

Random Pretties | Adoptabots

Brian Marshall is the creator of these quirky orphaned robots. The building blocks for his art are found items, bric-a-brac and other cast-offs with which he creates hopeful little objects. Quite fittingly he calls his collection the world’s first robot orphanage. You can get your very own orphaned robot from his Etsy shop. If you’re keen for more, you can view Brian’s Flickr stream where he posts photos of all his creations. I am particularly fond of his doggy bots since they resemble my beloved dachshunds with their long ears and little legs.

Bent Objects

This week’s random pretties come from Terry Border’s blog. Terry is a sculptor that takes everyday objects and transforms them into thought provoking characters. The characters and situations he creates are funny, quirky, sometimes sad but always offer some commentary on life that is worth considering. His unusual imagery had me chuckling delightedly while browsing through his blog.

I love it when designers and artists take a humdrum item from everyday life and transform it. They force one to look at the world with new eyes and appreciate the beauty that we often miss. Take the humble potato for instance. They take up space in your kitchen as shapeless beige lumps which are more appreciated for their taste than their looks. Mind you, potatoes are pretty darn tasty when given the right treatment. But I’ve never considered them to be very visually appealing. Until now. Take a look at the photos below – potatoes are magical! I’m sure that you’ll agree that the artist has found something in the humble potato that we have all been missing.
